MAY
14th
Providence, Civic Center
Classic setlist. Robert
apologised for not talking much and thanked the audience to "have made
the first night of the tour so enjoyable".
15th
Uniondale, Nassau Coliseum
The Figurehead was certainly played to please some
people in the audience who brought a big banner requesting the song. The
show was filmed for TV.
16th/17th
Philadelphia, Spectrum
20th
Worcester, Centrum
Lovesong was added to the repertoire. Also played
that night was the fairly rare Charlotte Sometimes.
23rd
Burgettstown, Starlake Amphitheatre
The first open air concert of the tour. All the usual
lights and slides couldn't be used because of the stage setting. And as
it was Saturday, Robert Smith announced : "Saturday I'm In Love".
A Forest extra's lyrics refered to time : "All the time I need to fill
/ Like all days are long."
27th
Williamsburg, William and Mary Hall
The band played Faith live for the first time of the
tour. The other noticeable event of the night were the security barriers
in front of the stage which couldn't handle the audience's enthousiasm,
so they broke. Robert asked people to move back without much illusion. There
were some stage divings as well (every opportunity was good apparently !)
before things were cooled down.
28th
Chapel Hill, Dean E. Smith Center
Typical setlist. Primary's
first verse was improvised and A Forest
didn't really include extra lyrics (apart from a few
Joy Division's lines "To the center of the city in the night, She's
Lost Control"). Good version though.
30th
Atlanta, The Omni
Typical show again. Robert played a couple of chords
from Erik Satie's Gymnopedie before Lovesong. The composer has always been
a favorite of his.
JUNE
03rd
Miami, Arena
Quite a short concert. Tiredness from the
Simon's birthday celebration started to appear, so they did an unusual last
encore : To Wish Impossible Things and Faith. Worth mentioning is that for
the very first time since November 1979, A Forest wasn't played at a concert.
04th
Miami, Arena
Slightly longer concert than the previous
one. Rare
playing of M. It was raining that night and the venue
was pretty much open air. Robert stopped playing the guitar on Boys Don't
Cry for some reason (technical ?).
05th
St Petersburgh, Suncoast Dome
The Figurehead didn't sound so good at this
show : awkward guitar chords, comatose singing struggling to remember the
right lines. It happens... But more important was tonight's version of A
Forest which didn't include extra lyrics. Maybe Robert didn't feel like
improvsiing that night. Or was it to finish on time ?
08th
New Orleans, Lake Front Arena
One of the few general
admission shows in America and
an unusual first encore : To Wish Impossible Things, A Letter To Elise,
Doing The Unstuck. After the concert, the band quickly boarded the bus tour
in order to attend a concert given by Ride (one of Robert's favorite groups)
in a club around 1am.
11th
Austin, Frank Erwin Center
Some improvised lyrics on Close To Me and
Primary. Robert told the crowd his most famous joke ("the man who think
he's an orange" one -already told on stage in Europe in 1989).
13th
Irving, Texas
Stadium
That was Robert Smith's favorite show of
the tour because it was so surreal. The Texas Stadium is where the Dallas
Cowboys baseball team play. The band were given the "Cowgirls"
dressing room and one of the baseball player named Emmit Smith left one
signed shirt of his for Robert there. So he actually put it on for the encores
!
16th
Monterrey,
Estadio Universitario
19th
Phoenix, American West Arena
The encores included a few different songs
: M, Doing The Unstuck, To Wish Impossible Things. On that last track, Robert
forgot the first verse and compared the Walk to "picking up a huge
head".
24th
San Diego, Sports Arena
A Forest's extra lyrics included entire verses from Faith ! It's probable
Robert wanted to play the song to end the concert but the others didn't
feel like it or something.
27th
Pasadena, Rosebowl
The largest venue the band ever played at. About 60
000 people attended the show. Fortunately there were two big video screens
to display images from the group. Depeche Mode even flew to see the Cure.
Robert Smith also declared to the press : "I like the idea when people
hear that we're playing the Rose Bowl that it must be a mistake. I would
like it to stay like that."
30th
Vancouver, Pacific Coliseum
Forgetting lyrics was that night's particularity. Open included an improvised
verse as well as A Forest. Few other songs from the encores had minor lyrics
changes too. Good show anyway.
JULY
01st
Seattle, Coliseum
High had an extended intro as there was a problem on Porl's guitar. A Night
Like This included a few improvised lyrics. At the end of the concert, Robert
congratulated the audience saying they're have been the best American audience
so far.
04th
San Jose, Spartan Stadium
A good atmosphere. Robert sang Doing The Unstuck a bit differently
("a bit carried away until I remembered what key to sing in").
And From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea was the "perfect song for us
to play on Independance Day". Lots of forgotten lyrics on Cut and In
Your House.
05th
Sacramento,
Cal Expo
A bit of a strange night. Robert Smith warned : "The next person who
picks up a shoe and thinks of trucking it at me : why won't you just whack
yourself in the mouth and smile ? It's much more fun to me. Or alternatively,
ask to come up on stage, give me the shoe and I'll throw it on your face
!". So
the mood wasn't the greatest on stage for a large part of the show but remained
professional (three encores still !). Robert also forgot the lyrics (a whole
verse) on Never Enough and let the guitars taking over (he didn't sing at
all for a minute).
11th
St
Louis, Maryland Heights, Riverport Amphitheatre
Close To Me's intro included a few lines from a song by John Denver : "Country
roads". Probably the result of being on tour for three months already.
13th
Minneapolis, Target Center
A little mistake on 6-string bass led Robert to play something unusual on
Lullaby (to cover the mistake up).
A Forest'sextra lyrics were about disguise ("you
scared all the girls and boys").
15th
Tinley Park, World Music Theatre
Open had a few approximative lines but Robert didn't completely forget the
lyrics. Quite reassuring just a few days before being filmed live. Maybe
that was the reason why this particular show was longer than usual. It even
included the rarely played A Letter To Elise and M.
18/19th
Auburn Hills, Palace
The concerts were filmed for an official video.
Because
of the filming, smoke wasn't used on stage on these nights (afraid that
nothing would be on the picture ?). The video for A
Letter To Elise was also filmed in the afternoon while soundchecking.
20th
Richfield, Coliseum
Some improvised lyrics on Never Enough and on Primary.
To gain time for something during the second
encore, Robert told the crowd three
jokes in a row.
23rd
Uniondale,
Nassau Coliseum
The last show of the North American tour (it was
supposed to take place in Flushing Meadows' Corona Park in New York originally),
that was certainly the reason why Boris allowed himself to kick the snare
several times after ending WCIBY ? or Lovesong. Just for the fun of it...
Robert dedicated Faith to the Cranes (opening act).
