NOVEMBER
01st
Zaragoza, Sala Multiusos
The Cure covered Police & Thieves (by the Clash) during the soundcheck
! A good version with Robert singing.
03rd
Toulouse, Palais des Sports
Charlotte Sometimes was played to please people in the audience requesting
the song. A Forest, like often on this European tour, didn't have extra
lyrics. The band rehearsed old songs during the soundcheck : Subway Song,
Grinding Halt, Funeral Party...and conluded with a fast ending version of
Want.
05th
Rennes, Salle Omnisports
Pretty good show with Cold being played in the encores. Shiver And Shake
had a few different lines. Quite a good jazz part (on piano) on Why Can't
I Be You's extra bit as well. The audience cheered that part.
06th
Paris, Bataclan
More or less secret show in a 1,500 people capacity club. The concert wasn't
sold out (you could still buy tickets that evening) as it was barely promoted.
Using
the pretext to celebrate the band's history, the group played two songs
from each album in chronological order. Also planned but not played were
Never Enough, Return (replaced by Treasure) and Boys Don't Cry in the encore.
Later, Robert Smith admitted he didn't like the show, as it was too hot
in the venue and they didn't have the time to prepare the concert mentally.
They just got there and played.
08th
Amnéville, Galaxie
Most surprising version of 10.15 Saturday Night, with Simon playing the
original bass solo at the end for the first time ever (the Michael Dempsey's
one). That certainly wasn't premedited at all (messed up with wrong notes)
and quite weird.
09th
Gent, Flanders Expo
10th
Lille, Zénith
Slightly shorter concert but a good performance and rare tracks were played
too : Numb, The Funeral Party. Robert Smith didn't talk much that night.
Why Can't I Be You ? was the "regular" three-minute version.
12th
Hannover, Musichalle
Not the greatest performance overall. They probably
started to suffer from being on tour for so long that year. Robert
forgot the end of the lyrics of Charlotte Sometimes. A Forest had a really
weird and long intro with the guitar playing solos and then just playing
"whatever"... Bizarre.
13th
Berlin, Deutschlandhalle
The guitar solo going wrong (but not bad) on Mint Car led to few improvised
lyrics afterwards. Robert thanked the audience for "staying" before
the second encore (?). Faith was declared to be a song they didn't play
often, but when they did, he hoped it killed.
15th
Katowice, Spodekhalle
First concert in Poland ever. Improvised lyrics on Charlotte Sometimes (lots
!) and Play For Today. A very good version of Faith ended the show. Nice
6-strings bass solos. Some parts were also sung without any music, just
drums accompanying.
16th
Wien, Stadthalle
Quite a weird show as Robert Smith was either drunk on stage or didn't care.
The soundcheck was fine but during the show he whispered or sang on a higher
tone than usual when that wasn't forgotten lyrics (The Walk). There were
also hardly any talking between the songs. Plainsong was extended, the singing
part starting much later than normally (let's suppose it could have been
some microphone problem). The good surprise was Grinding Halt being played
for first time on tour. Robert warned the audience : "I can't speak
Austrian, you're very very lucky"...
17th
Praha, Sportovni Hala
A bit of a bizarre show again. Robert Smith pretty much made a mess on the
lyrics of some songs, ending up not singing them at times (The Blood, Strange
Attraction). No doubt he was "high" or something. He also held
that note on "prayers for raiiiiiinnnnnnn" twice. Grinding Halt
was played again.
20th
Leipzig, Messehalle
Technically a very good show but quite an uncommunicative night. Why Can't
I Be You was the standard album version (3 minutes) again with some piano
played during the verses. Grinding Halt was played particulary fast that
night.
21st
Munchen, Zenith
Robert Smith was certainly in great shape at this show. Really good singing.
Gone was introduced as follows : "We don't normally play this song,
I hope you can see why." Because The Cure aren't exactly jazzmen, aren't
they ? On 10:15 Saturday Night, Robert also added the line "And upstairs
noone listening" while Simon improvised, on purpose, part of the bass
solo.
24th
Kiel, Ostseehalle
A very poor attendance (1100 ?) but as that was mainly hardcore fans, the
band played really old songs : The Hanging Garden The Funeral Party, The
Figurehead, Subway Song, Grinding Halt, M, The Drowning Man, In Your House
! Robert warned the audience they'd play stuff people wouldn't believe.
A
Forest included Joy Division's Isolation tune at some point during the guitar
solo.
25th
Essen, Grugahalle
Robert Smith apologized for not talking much. But he explained he had nothing
to say so that was a good reason. Subway Song was played again along with
Grinding Halt and the group would continue playing those almost every night
until the end of the tour.
26th
Hanau, Scharttnerhalle
Why Can't I Be You was played in its extended version again (not a standard
thing for the previous two weeks). But more unusual was the line "Boys
Don't Cry" being changed to "Boys Sometimes Cry" that night.
30th
Stockholm, Hovet
Some improvised lines were added to the regular ones on Disintegration for
some reason. Sounding pretty good. You Really Got Me and Ziggy Stardust
guitar chords introduced songs from the encores. Simon Gallup played the
1978 bass solo again at the end of 10:15 Saturday Night. Less messy than
the previous time in Amnéville.
