| This particular concert
was the second night of the "A Dose of Sundays" appearences which
had the band playing the four Sundays of the month in the same venue. And
this recording is the oldest Cure bootleg available. It captures very well
the atmosphere on stage in early 1979. A pretty different one from 6 months
later as the band's performances (and Robert Smith's singing) improved with
time and work. One funny fact was that Robert exclusively played on his
old Top 20 guitar instead of the by far superior Fender Jazzmaster guitar
that Chris Parry got him to record the TIB album. Therefore the live guitar
sound on this era was heavier and more rough than expected. Another difference
was that the stage included two microphones as Michael Dempsey would sing
on Foxy Lady and do the backing vocals on several other tracks. He would
also sometimes introduce songs as well. Worth mentioning was the version of 10:15 Saturday Night they played opening the concert : the end of the song was slightly extended after the bass solo, including a reggae-like way of playing the guitar. Grinding Halt & Fire In Cairo were announced as possible next singles that night too. And Object was dedicated to "the girl in the middle whose hair is going flat because of the heat". Three Imaginary Boys was introduced as follows : "This is serious. Well, as serious as we ever get !". Later during the show, a guitar string broke and Robert joked about how he'd play with 5 strings then. But he changed the broken string himself, as he didn't have a roadie. And that was the subject of another joke. |
