APRIL
The Cure were approched to record a song
for a Jimmy Hendrix tribute. They chose Purple Haze and while rehearsing
for this, Virgin Radio 1215, a brand new radio, asked the group for something
to broadcast on their opening night. So they submitted
their version of Purple Haze, including a "trick hippy fade ending
to fool the DJ" (which it did).
An electronic version of the song would be recorded a bit later by Robert
Smith on his own at Comforts Place in London for the
tribute album. Re-recording the track was a reaction to the
other artists (guitar heroes) taking part on the project.
Then, Robert, along with Bryan "Chuck" New, remixed Jewel by the
Cranes for a single release. Robert actually played bass VI parts on the
track. A nice rememberance of the Wish Tour.
JUNE
13th
London, Finsbury Park,
Great Xpectations Festival
The festival was arranged in support of independent radio station Xfm. The
group was headlining and appeared as 4-piece since Porl departed at the
end of the previous year. Many of the recent songs couldn't be played. But
the only 1993 live performance was excellent and included quite unexpected
tracks. A Forest greatly closed the evening with a lot of wah wah effect
on the guitar.
SEPTEMBER
13th
Show release. All
the tracks were recorded live in Auburn Hills (USA) in July 1992. Show was
the third Cure live album but the first one to be released in America. It
was also released on video (which included extra tracks) and an edited version
was projected in theatres around the world.
OCTOBER
26th
Paris release. Another live
album, this time recorded in Paris (hence the title) in October 1992 and
featuring old classics. An album intended to the group's fan base. Fifty
percent of the proceeds were donated to the Red Cross and the Red Crescent
movement.
DECEMBER
The group recorded Burn, a track especially written for the movie The Crow.
The film was based on a comic book which refered to the band and the Hanging
Garden. But Robert Smith prefered a brand new song in the same spirit and
that was the opportunity to dust off his old flutes too.
1994
February was spent in court listening to perjury, the consequence of Lol
Tolhurst's lawsuit from 1991. In August, the band recorded twenty new demos.
September saw the release of Lost
Wishes (a cassette only available through mail order) and consisting
in four previously unreleased instrumental tracks recorded during the Wish
sessions.
On September 16th, the
London High Court rejected Lol Tolhurst's claim over royalties and he faced
a legal bill of £1 million. The following month, Boris Williams left the
Cure to found Babacar with his girlfriend, Caroline
(formely in Shelleyan Orphans). So,
drum auditions were held at St Catherine's court in Bath (property of the
actress Jane Seymour) where the band just started to work on the new record
: Bare (working title). Seven different drummers made it on the recordings.
